CSD HOME STAGING-K.Hubert: Popcorn Ceiling Photos

Popcorn Ceiling Photos

 Hi All,

Finally here are the pics of the work my husband and I did on our popcorn ceilings. I think they look terrific. I am still getting used to how Activerain works and I found out I needed windows and not a mac to post pictures. Now I'm good.

So Karen..spill the secrets here..do you tape off the edges and then spray?  And how do you get a perfect circle?  Beautiful job!

Those popcorn ceilings are aweseome.  Can you direct your AR colleagues to a reference that tells one how to do this.  Also, I have a client who is interested in patching the popcorn ceiling.  If you have any information, please let us know.

What a clever idea.  They do look great...but how did you do this ?

Did you already have popcorn ceilings and just "removed" some to make the design or did you actually add the stuff?  This is a great way to get an updated look with them!  Turned out great!

Hi everyone, We used a 2.5 inch paint scraper to scrape and get a clean edge.  You can design your own and put molding anywhere you want. Scraping is very messy though.  If you do it dry, we used a shop vacuum at the ceiling to get as much dust as possible as we did it.  We also did the bedroom by spraying the ceiling in spots with water to wet it.  Still messy but it worked out ok.

In answer to Judy Heinrich's question, yes the ceilings were already popcorn and we scraped them where we wanted to.

In response to Joan Whitebook,  I'm sorry, but there is no reference that I know of, my husband and I thought up this all by ourselves.  It is very hard to patch popcorn ceilings and get it to blend properly.  I would just scrape the whole thing although it is a lot of work.

Vicki Watziawick, you asked about getting a perfect circle.  We used a compass and a pencil.  And then used the paint scraper.

Karen - The pics look great!  Love the detail.

Mac note: You can post pics and use everything on AR on your Mac using Firefox.  The browser that comes with the mac Safari has some glitches with AR and other sites that are Microsoft based.  It's free to download Firefox.  I don't ever use Safari.

I really like this! I am not a fan of popcorn ceilings, but I just love what you did. Thankyou for the inspiration.

Looks great. Do you have instructions on how to do this? Oh, I have a Mac and struggled with the photos as well, then I figured out that I had to change browsers. Safari did not work; but Firefox I can do anything! Hope that's helpful.

Gorgeous architectural elements. Why didn't you guys remove the popcorn though? Too pricey?!
Posted by Christine Craig, Allied ASID (Designology) over 3 years ago
Hi Rhonda,  Thanks for the tip regarding Firefox.  I am definately going to try it.
Instructions are above on another one of my responses.

Hi Christine,  Removing the popcorn wouldn't have been too pricey since it didn't cost anything to remove some.  It is a lot of work and very messy. Thanks for commenting.

Very nice!!  Your husband did a great job!!  Popcorn ceilings aren't easy to deal with, but this is a great way to dress them up!

Hi Karen, I just saw your note in the marketing group and wanted to stop by and check out your blog.

I love the popcorn ceilings, not usually my taste but the clean lines give a nice, classy look to the whole thing. Nice to "meet" you my fellow Canadian.

Posted by marti garaughty (WordPress in Plain English, blog graphics and design) over 3 years ago

Very cool - indeed. Changing them dramatically without having to take it all off.

There is an aerosol can of popcorn patch that is fairly decent but not  quite the same as the original - ok for a small patch area.

Hi, Karen!

I love what you did - what a difference! It really makes the standard, not-so-attractive popcorn ceiling look, as you said, like a work of art! I sent this link out to my team!

You got a five rating and bookmarked from me.  Love this kind of info. and the photos.  Too many homes have these ceilings and homeowners don't want to deal with the messy removal.  What a solution!  I'll be sharing your photos with many.  Thanks so much!

Karen,

I've never seen anything like this! What wildly creative minds you and your husband have! The builders here in my area use a very heavy texture on the walls and ceilings. I wonder if they could do something similar....

Hi all, we are now thinking about our family room and what to do with the popcorn there.  We need more lighting too.  My husband and I are really brainstorming about what to do.  This is the last popcorn ceiling in our house that needs a transformation. Any ideas?
Posted by Home Stager Karen Hubert (Center Stage Design-real estate staging, Hamilton/Burlington) over 2 years ago

Wow, until tonight, I never met a popcorn ceiling I liked. However, you've changed me forever. Nice work!

By the way, I'm on a Mac and use Firefox. It works great!

What you did give me an idea on what to do with our popcorn ceiling.  But isn't it dangerous to scrape a popcorn ceiling on your own especially if your house is old and there might be asbestos presence?  Ours has asbestos presence and we don't know what to do with it.  I want to copy what you did but afraid of what might happen in the long term.

Posted by Christy 11 months ago

Hi Christy.  The scraping is only what is on the inside, which is what you are living with anyway.  You could wear gloves and a mask if you wish.  Sometimes you can buy these items at a dollar store, although I am not sure if you are from the US.  If you are, do you have dollar stores?

Posted by Home Stager Karen Hubert (Center Stage Design-real estate staging, Hamilton/Burlington) 11 months ago

Hi Karen.  Thanks for the quick reply.  Yes, I live in a condo in Los Angeles, CA. We had our popcorn ceiling tested for asbestos presence.  The result turned out that there is 3-8% of asbestos in the acoustic or popcorn sample we have it tested which needs an abatement contractor to do it for us since fibers might be released when we disturbed it and remove it on our own without the proper methods per health standard regulations.  I really, really love what you did to your ceilings and my husband and I want to copy and do it.  Do you think it is okay to do it on our own and just disregard having an abatement contractor do it for us?  It's kinda costly hiring an abatement contractor.  I got a quote for $1700 and we need to take all our furniture out of our place....

Posted by Christy 11 months ago

Hi Christy,  I am going to ask my husband aa few questions regarding this.  I will try to get back to you this evening.  Have a great day.

Posted by Home Stager Karen Hubert (Center Stage Design-real estate staging, Hamilton/Burlington) 11 months ago

The pictures look great.  I am not much of a detail person when it comes to these type of projects so would be scared to try this in my home (and yes it has the popcorn ceilings)

Posted by Christine McInerney & Jennifer Halinkowski, Green, EcoBroker, e-Pro (Keller Williams Realty) 10 months ago
Christy, if I am reading correctly and Karen is advising you it's safe to remove asbestos containing popcorn yourself with a dust mask and gloves from a dollar store than this is the the worst advice I've ever heard from a supposed decorator. It is absolutly and completely unsafe for you to remove asbestos ceilings without proper training and ppe. Go with your $1,700 bid - save yourself a slow agonizing death down the road. Good luck!
